Over het boek

HENRO is een boek van de Nederlandse kunstfotograaf Bastiaan Woudt. Het project ontstond tijdens een reis over het Japanse eiland Shikoku, waar Woudt en zijn broer de oude Shikoku Henro-pelgrimsroute volgden. Deze rondgaande route verbindt 88 boeddhistische tempels door bergen, bossen en kustlandschappen.

De beelden die daar ontstonden vormen geen reisverslag, maar fragmenten van een ervaring. Foto’s die zich niet laten verklaren en eerder de sfeer van een herinnering of droom dragen dan die van documentatie.

HENRO, uitgegeven door 1605 Collective, is geen conventioneel fotoboek maar een zorgvuldig vormgegeven object waarin beeld, witruimte en stilte op de pagina samenkomen. De foto’s staan zonder bijschriften en nodigen uit tot een persoonlijke interpretatie.

Het boek werd op 27 maart 2026 gepresenteerd, tegelijk met de wereldpremière van de HENRO-tentoonstelling bij Studio Woudt in Alkmaar.

    This book is really beautiful. The physical object itself, the cover style, the pages, the printing, is so beautifully done with such attention to detail. The photographs are intriguing glimpses and fragments of Japan, graphic, evocative moments that have a mesmerizing contemplative feel.

    I loved the concept, the layout, binding, images, but the printing failed to deliver -- images too flat, lacking the intensity that subtlety requires. They needed more intense black, more contrast. Also, my book arrived with bent corners. I had high hopes but was, sadly, disappointed.
