Babs Decruyenaere

Antwerp, Belgium

Babs Decruyenaere is a Belgian visual artist based in Antwerp. She studied graphic design at KdG in Antwerp and completed a master's in fine arts at St-Joost in Breda in 2003. Soon after, she left conventional photography behind for analogue black and white made without a camera: photograms, camera obscura works and long sessions in the darkroom.

Her practice begins with walking. On daily walks she collects small things that others pass by, above all stones. The hand is her measure: what fits in her palm, she keeps. In photograms, stone stacks, sculptures and mobiles she moves from the smallest detail of a pebble to the structure of the landscape and the cosmos, guided by intuition rather than concept.

Her work has been shown at Valerie Traan Gallery in Antwerp, NO/Gallery in Ghent, Geukens & De Vil, Galerie Michel Rein in Brussels, Grand-Hornu and FotoMuseum Antwerp. In 2021 Valerie Traan Gallery published her artist book Putting up walls. Recent exhibitions include A if a hold is something you can shape at Antwerp Art Box 31 (2025) and In the Spirit of Georgia O'Keeffe at Fabriek Noord in Antwerp (2026).
