Magazines
A printed magazine on art, architecture, photography and design. One theme per issue.
About the magazine
1605 Magazine is the printed heart of 1605 Collective. It was started by Bastiaan Woudt as a place where art, architecture, photography and design meet on paper, and it is designed from the first page to the last by creative director Janneke Schrey. Each issue is built around one theme, and that theme decides everything: who we speak to, which portfolios we show, what the essays are about.
Inside you find long conversations with artists, architects and designers, curated portfolios of the photographers we work with, and essays that take their time. The first issue opened with Axel Vervoordt, who agreed to talk because he found what we were doing interesting enough. That conversation opened doors to others: Vincent Van Duysen, Mark Manders, Mona Kuhn, Todd Hido and many more since.
There are no advertisers and no sponsors. Nobody buys a page. The magazine exists because readers buy it, and that is what keeps it honest and independent. It appears when it is ready, not on a fixed date, and every issue is printed once in a limited edition. When an issue is sold out, it stays sold out.
The object matters as much as the content. Uncoated paper chosen for the images it carries, a large format, a cover with blind embossing, and no text over pictures. It is a magazine you can sit with for a while, and it is made to be kept, not thrown away with the newspapers.
Three issues so far. No.1 Reflection (2023, edition of 1,000) with Axel Vervoordt, Paul Cupido, Sarah van Rij, Kacper Kowalski and Maura Sullivan among others. No.2 Illusion (2024, edition of 750) with Kristian Schuller, Bruno V. Roels, Mona Kuhn, Vincent Van Duysen and Sabine Marcelis. No.3 Duality (2025), launched at Reflex Gallery in Amsterdam, with Mark Manders, Todd Hido, Anne Claus, Casa Muñoz and Gregor Törzs.
Some of the interviews and portfolios from the magazine also appear on this site, under Articles. The printed issue remains the full version.

Illusion
1605 Collective's annual magazine offers a perspective on the people and themes that shape their world, featuring articles and visuals. In addition to interviews, insights, thoughtfully curated selections, and objects, the magazine also showcases portfolios of the creatives they represent. In this second issue, 1605 Collective invites you to find yourself in a place where we look behind the visible. Illusion captures the beauty of ambiguity, that thin line between light and shadow, between the tangible and the intangible. We sit comfortably on the edge of the unknown, as it keeps us guessing.
Featuring Kristian Schuller, Bruno V. Roels, Mona Kuhn, Vincent Van Duysen, Florence Cools, Michael Oliver Love, Sabine Marcelis, Levi van Veluw, Sayuri Ichida, Peggy Kuiper, Bastiaan Woudt, Ileana Moro, Nadine van den Bosch, Norm Architects, Mick Nieuwenhuis, Anna Muller, Nancy Poeran, among others.
