Thirza Schaap | New Work

By 1605 Publishers
Photography, Portfolio

Plastic Ocean by the Dutch photographer Thirza Schaap is an ongoing project dedicated to creating awareness about climate change and enforcing sustainable development.

Schaap works with plastic waste she finds on the beach in Cape Town, where her studio is located. Thirza's day starts with walking on the beach with the aim to clean the sand and the water of harmful plastic and microplastic pieces.

The artist collects plastic bottles, packaging, threads, straws, and rubber bands, among other dangerous to the environment discarded items. By upcycling them into beautiful sculptures, she creates meaningful work which elevates climate change issues among other topics and creates positive behaviour patterns in society.

In 2020, we published Thirza's first monograph 'Plastic Ocean'. The signed book is now available at the 1605 Publishers' store.

Thirza Schaap is represented by the Bildhalle gallery in the Netherlands. You can see more of her new work on their website.
