1605 Magazine no.3 Duality by 1605 Collective

About this issue

Duality, the third issue of 1605 Magazine, considers how creative work takes shape between opposing forces. Light and darkness, intuition and reason, restraint and excess, the analogue and the digital: these contrasts are not presented as choices with a single answer. They are places where artists, architects and designers find room to experiment and develop their ideas.

The theme becomes tangible through the people and practices featured in the issue. In conversation with Janneke Schrey, interior designer Anne Claus reflects on the balance between her own approach and the wishes of a client, and on the freedom that collaboration can create. The portfolio of Madrid-based Casa Muñoz explores interiors in which rich textures and considered restraint exist together.

For Gert Motmans, photography and collage bring another set of contrasts into view: abstraction and recognisable forms, the present and the past, visual composition and personal feeling. His work combines analogue photographs with collected materials. Elsewhere in the issue, contributors including Mark Manders, Attila Ataner, Todd Hido, Elza Wandler and Gregor Törzs extend the conversation across art, photography and design.

A collaboration with The Creators Club adds a special feature and an accompanying four-part Dutch podcast series with Bastiaan Woudt, Tja Ling Hu, Sheila Verdegaal and Maria Bodil. Their conversations explore identity, intuition and change in creative life. Across its 168 pages, Duality brings these different perspectives together in a printed edition of 500 copies.
