Images: After Beauty, Maura Sullivan
Maura Sullivan (b. 1971, United States) graduated from Syracuse University and attended the International School of Photography. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and has been widely exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions around the world.
Sullivan’s first monograph, Things We Remember, was published in 2021 by Skeleton Key Press. After Beauty, a striking linen-bound tome, is her second monograph and was published in 2022 by 1605 Collective.
After Beauty is inspired by both poetry and Sullivan’s silent meditative walks around her native New York—the city of hidden gems and mysterious encounters. Themes from a favourite poem written by her friend, artist and poet Walter Fields, are woven throughout After Beauty and serve as the red thread connecting one photo to the next, one idea to another. The images in the book are subtle, nostalgic. But they are still powerful; they still contain multitudes.
