Alkmaar, the Netherlands

Bastiaan Woudt (1987) is a Dutch photographer and publisher working in black and white. His portraits, landscapes and still lifes explore form, texture and contrast, bringing the human figure and the world around it into a shared visual language.

Self-taught, Woudt began his professional practice in 2011. His work draws on the history of photography while using contemporary digital techniques. Light and shadow, grain and simplified compositions are central to his approach. His photographs have been exhibited at Paris Photo, AIPAD and Photo London, and are held in collections including the Rijksmuseum, the Getty Museum and Museum Kranenburgh.

Books are an important part of his practice. His monographs include Karawan, Mukono, Peak, Champions and HENRO, each developed around a distinct body of work. Mukono grew from a project with the Marie-Stella-Maris Foundation, while Champions was made with Orange Babies. Alongside his personal projects, he has produced editorial and commissioned work for publications and brands including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Chanel and Dior.

In 2020 he founded 1605 Collective, an independent publishing house for photography and art books. Through its books and magazine, the platform brings together his own work and that of other artists.
