HENRO by 1605 Collective

About the book

HENRO is a book by Dutch fine art photographer Bastiaan Woudt. The project originated during a journey across the Japanese island of Shikoku, where Woudt and his brother followed the ancient Shikoku Henro pilgrimage route, a circular path linking 88 Buddhist temples through mountains, forests, and coastal landscapes.

The images that emerged are not a travelogue, but fragments of an experience. Photographs that resist explanation and carry the atmosphere of memory or dream rather than documentation.

Published by 1605 Collective, HENRO is not a conventional photobook but a carefully considered object, where image, white space, and silence interact on the page. The photographs appear without captions, inviting a personal interpretation.

The book was launched on 27 March 2026, alongside the world premiere of the HENRO exhibition at Studio Woudt in Alkmaar, the Netherlands.

    A beautiful gift

My sister is my rock. She has always been there for me, and in particular this year she's supported me. Although I wanted the book for myself, I bought it for her. She said it was absolutely beautiful and that our mom, who passed away recently, would have cherished it as well. My sister will be going to Japan this May to take the Nakahechi pilgrimage. Your photography inspires me to explore not only the world, but myself. Thank you for making my sister's birthday special.

    My beautiful Henro

The Henro book was delivered very quickly and perfectly packed. It is a beautifully made book describing the Japan I have lived in for four years. It berings back memories in a truly unique fashion. Thank you Bastiaan.

    Henro

One of my favorite books. The work took me along the journey with Bastiaan. Memorable and striking, with an innate tranquility. Thank you for publishing this. I've followed him on instagram but the large scale book changes the experience significantly. Inspiring.

Henro - a beautifully crafted piece of art

An amazing homage to Japan. Woudt beautifully captures the true essence of Japan through his signature monochrome style. The minimalist compositions, the play of shadow, and the timeless stillness feel deeply rooted in Japanese culture and tradition. It is a stunning visual pilgrimage. Thank you for publishing such a beautiful piece of art.

    Exquisite

This book is really beautiful. The physical object itself, the cover style, the pages, the printing, is so beautifully done with such attention to detail. The photographs are intriguing glimpses and fragments of Japan, graphic, evocative moments that have a mesmerizing contemplative feel.

    Henry

I loved the concept, the layout, binding, images, but the printing failed to deliver -- images too flat, lacking the intensity that subtlety requires. They needed more intense black, more contrast. Also, my book arrived with bent corners. I had high hopes but was, sadly, disappointed.

A balanced mix of movement and stillness

Dear Bastian, I feel that with your new book, ‘Henro’, you have captured a balanced mix of movement and stillness with great sensitivity and shared it with your readers. Thank you for that! Rudolf

    Perfect in showing only essentials

Bastiaan has the excellent capability to show only the essential, leaving elements away which are irrelevant by using contrast and black and white. The printpaper is perfect. I recommend this book to everyone interested in minimalism and slow down.
